We all love the exotic and glamorous look of the French actors. Unsurprisingly some of them have reached above and beyond their local industry and set foot to the international level. In this article we talk about some of the finest French actors and actresses who have insane popularity in Hollywood and the international arena.

Jean Reno


Jean Reno is one such popular French actor who initially only starred in French movies but has now spread his reach beyond France. He displayed his talent in many American movies such as French Kiss in 1995, Mission: Impossible in 1996, Ronin, Godzilla, The Pink Panther, The Pink Panther 2 etc. He also played the character of Captain BezuFache in the book to movie adaptation, The Da Vinci Code.

For all those who keep in contact with the movie industry, it’s not a secret that Reno turned down the role of Agent Smith in the Matrix. He was the voice over for Mufasaa in the French version of The Lion King. Reno is an internationally famous French actor who never ceases to amaze us.

Marion Cotillard

Following her Academy award for best actress in La Vie en Rose in 2007 for her portrayal of Édith Piaf, she received an international recognition. This gave her the chance to act in English language movies such as Public Enemies opposite Johnny Depp, Christopher Nolan’s Inception in 2010, Midnight in Paris in 2011, and again another Christoper Nolan movie, The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.

Audrey Tautou


Audrey Justine Tautou is without a doubt one of the best French actresses Hollywood has seen. Born in France, she was initially interested in playing comedy roles. She won the best young actress in 1998 in the JeuneComedien de Cinema festival. She portrayed AméliePoulain in the movie Amélie which was a success worldwide. She also portrayed the role of Sophie Neveu in the popular book to movie adaptation, The Da Vinci Code to perfection. In 2002 she was able to play a role in the British thriller movie Dirty Pretty Things and in 2004 she displayed her wonderful acting in the romantic war film, A Very Long Engagement based on the novel of the same name.

Julie Delpy


Born in Paris, France in 1969 to actors Albert Delpy and Marie Pillet, Julie first starred in Jean-Luc Godard’s movie Détective in 1995. She gained popularity in the French movie industry and then moved on to American and European productions such as Killing Zoe in 1993, Disney’s The Three Musketeers also in 1993, and the Before series which included Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight which aired in 1995, 2004 and 2013 respectively. She was also named by the People Magazine in their “25 Most Beautiful” feature in 1995.

Juliette Binoche


Bionche was born to an actor and director mother. Her acting in the movie The Unbearable Lightness of Being was able to attract the attention of international film critics. She was called “almost ethereal in her beauty and innocence” by Roger Ebert, a Chicago Sun-Times film critic.

In 1994, Bionche got the opportunity to star as the heroine of the most expensive movie in France, The Horseman On the Roof in 1995. And it’s a famous fact that she turned down the roles in 3 of the best Seven Spielberg movies namely, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989, Jurassic Park in 1993 and Schindler’s List in 1993. She starred in the movies Chocolat and The English Patient later in 1996 and the year 2000 respectively, the latter of which was able to give her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Gad Elmaleh


Gad Elmaleh is a popular actor who is Moroccan by origin but started his career by acting in French movies. He was initially a political science student before he came to Paris. He then wrote a one man show named Décalages which contained the experience he gained during his time in Montreal and Paris in the year 1996. He was also able to present another one man show later by the name of La Vie Normale. Some of his famous work includes the role of Choukri in the movie Chouchou in 2003, Priceless in 2006, Midnight in Paris in 2011, Le capital in 2012 and Les seigneurs in 2012. And he provided the voice to the popular cartoon animated movie The Adventures of TinTin for the role Ben Salaad.
